Sometimes, it's when you're not looking for anything in particular that you find the things which are most spectacular.
Case in point, today, a lazy Wednesday, (God bless student life)in between trying to explain to myself how Ghesquire's Balenciaga textile blocking of recent collections could be interpreted into a method of creating a ground plain with enhanced dynamism, and humming along to Beirut, i stumbled across Niels Peeraer.
If the pieces within his collection are not to your taste, you must at least admit that the story behind his most recent collection is possibly one of the sweetest you have ever heard (or maybe i am biased as it's almost autobiographical for yours truly?).

"A collection about a boy who has an imaginary boyfriend, but prepares everyday to get married to his love. He wears his grandmother's couture jackets and does nothing but playing videogames and eating sweets."

I keep coming back to these 2 dudes on The Street Peeper (on which i believe i have THE most awkward phot ever taken).

I really love their looks.

I always feel an urge to reinvent, reinvest and reconfigure my aesthetic each semester.
This semester I started by making my own EYEpad (moleskine bedazzled with googly eyes):

I also bought some of those really awkward cropped trousers from Balenciaga SS11 which were too big. So i'm getting the right size (mail backs are so complex when you live so far away!!!!)

My lovely Docs are finally holey soled, and while i know they're totally played out now and it's massively cliched to have them, they're just so easy and go with everything, so i'll probably get another pair.....kind of digging the white ones though too....is it okay to buy a black AND a white pair?

I only just saw this building yesterday. It is designed by General Design and is the flagship store for Lad Musician in Nagoya Japan. What makes it so interesting is how light and open everything inside feels despite there being no openings on the walls except for the entry door.
I like how textural the finish of the concrete is.
I'm not sure how they deal with heat loss/gain, which is usually a huge issue with skylights. Possibly they used Danpalon or a similar plastic material instead of glass, but the quality of light doesn't look diffuse enough to be coming though such plastic sheeting.

So, I found out about Egg, a London based label and store run by Maureen Doherty, an ex-Issey Miyake assistant, whose designs are heavily influenced by Indian and Arab clothing, a few months ago, but have been becoming increasingly obsessed. I would love to work at there. The store has more of a lifestyle approach than just selling clothes selling ceramics and linens etc also. I want an Egg lifestyle. (I wonder if Ms Doherty needs an assitant? I'm good with space and things...very helpful, also!)
The label also opened an annex in Dover Street Market at earlier this year, which is really interesting as the layering of garments is highly reflective of the Comme des Garcons Mainline collection for SS11 (that i never stop talking about). Possibly Ms Kawakubo was inspired by some of the Egg pieces with their nonchalant layering.

For a good month, i have been trying to figure out where Ms. A. Olsen may have got her shoes from. She is often snapped dashing around town, at the airport or cruising through Barneys in shoes more sensibile (but usually no less stylish) than her sister's, but this pair in particular caught my eye.
I know the McQueens shown above are not the EXACT same ones (hers clearly have a slightly thicker sole, and appear to have elasticized sides rather than a monk strap), but they seem to have the same over shape, which is what i loved about Ashley's pair.

This week's shoe lust is proudly brought to you by Raf Simons.

This pair i like best (at the moment at least) I like the crisp strip of pink a lot, and the thicker band cloer to the opening of the shoe is really beuatiful. I think these would look really great worn with a bunch of Comme des Garcons or Yohji Yamamoto and be harmonious, but still Raf.

Same again, but in blue. I feel blue is a little safe.

The platformed variety from the same collection are kind of amazing. I can imagine Ashley shopping at Barneys in a pair of these, and if there's one thing to always remember it is that one should always aspire to be an Olsen!

This whole SS11 collection was amazing and clinical and collagey just like good Raf should be. I found it interesting though that such a clinical collection have similar details as the Prada collection for SS09. In particular the banding of shoes.
I have wanted rubber bands around my shoes ever since seeing these and cannot put to words the disappointment when i hurredly walked into Herzog& deMeuron's Prada in Aoyam hoping to lay my grubby little mits on a pair to call my own, to love and to hold forever and ever.
I actually adored a lot of the elements of that Prada collection. It was the one that made me start taking note of Miuccia's vision for the modern man.

I loved the use of suspensory straps on the inside of the garment allowed to peak into public view. Very subversive.

Raf didn't use straps but zips up the back. I feel that both are really quite feminine details, the Prada one being reminiscent of a bra strap peak-a-boo and Raf's being a clear reference to the fastening techniques usually reserved for womenswear.

I loved loved loved the loooong polo shirts so much! Again, not stocked in Sydney ( i was too silly to know about Proxy services at that time, also). However, i managed to find a copy of it at good old General Pants by Vanishing Elephant that came with a dandy bow too. I still wear it sometimes (sans bow)
This is the Raf look that reminded me most closely of the long polo, due to the overall styling and layering.

LATEX COAT! i would sell my soul for this! (not even kidding.
Patrick Ervell's latex pieces for SS10 were REALLY nice too, but i never saw it anywhere for sale anywhere.

Cry me a river.

I should probably segue into something about "elastic architecture" here and try and teach you something new, but it seems the most appropriate thing to do would be to show you how elastic the buildings in Japan are.
Watch them sway after the quakes.
It's awfully unnerving to even think the very structures we take for granted as being solid could infact have such elastic properties.
Engineering genius.
But terrifying.

I like to think about how ideas from womenswear may eventually filter through to menswear. After getting dressed this morning, I immediately remembered the Rodarte SS11 skirt layering.

Speaking of Rodarte, i kind of want to buy this to hang on my wall.

It feels like a parody of the ideas i was having in Digital Research Studio, about the ultimate product of a culmination of architecture and fashion being furniture....but here they've made the clothing appear in a fabric that mimics wood, often used to make the rooms around us and furniture in them.
It also reminds me of the Yohji "unwearable" wooden dresses....I wonder if the Mulleavy sisters were also questioning the role of expensive designer clothes in a time of global financial decay, as Yohji was in 91/92?

...or maybe they're just having fun with photo-realistic textile prints like the rest of the world? :P

Yesterday, I discovered i could wear my Rad Hourani Jacket with the sleeves half unzipped bu still attached to channel Comme des Garcons SS11's extra dangly sleeve bits.

Browsing Yvan Rodic's blog this morning, I stumbled upon this boy he shot in New York.
Kind of obsessed, to say the least.

and I like that he is otherwise styled in quite a masculine way, apart from the sunglasses and hair colour...but then the juxtaposition of stubble as well, is just great! (he also has nice skin and a great nose!)

(not that I'd say this boy looks particularly elegant...this quote always comes to mind when i'm thinking of masculinity vs femininity...and it's NEVER wrong to quote the Dame!)

In other good hair news, Charlotte Free has a delightful shade of pink running through her mop. (how perfectly "now" of me to be discussing Ms. Free!)

I have always had a soft spot for softer shades of pink, around the Butt Magazine end of the spectrum, but it's just not something i like in my clothes....so maybe i should start wearing it upon my head?

My digital design research studio from last semester was even presented in a wide scale of these shades to help evoke the mood of fleshy tumours and medical imaging of sectioned body parts.

another contributing factor to this powdery pink post is all the lovely pastel coloured foods that help me escape from the monotony of my daily reality.

(N.B. no pink soda...it makes me vomit. LITERALLY!)

I suppose the colour craving was intensified last week after seeing Joanna Newsom perform at Angel Place Recital Hall here in Sydney. She plays here almost on an anual basis, and i have been fortunate enough to witness her live performances each time, and been subsequently blown away after each performance. She is truly transcendent. Anyway, the point is, she is also SERIOUSLY stylish. The first time I saw her play, she played the harp and sang away wearing sporting a very impressive pair of swirly violet platforms, of which the detailing was Art Deco inspired enough to lead me to believe they were potentially Galliano.
At last week's show, she wore a dress with a pleated bottom in the a perfectly semi-sheer, pastelly pink, almost nude, colour. It was worn with such ease that it could have come from one of the recent Valentino collections. (I am loving what Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli are doing there!)

I cannot talk about these soft colours, of course, without referencing the amazing Mikimoto Pearls building in Ginza, Tokyo by Toyo Ito. With openings that look like they could be taken from a house in Bedrock, the huge tower stands proudly on a street corner in the upmarket district renowned for it's iconic designer boutiques (another architectural highlight for me here is Louis Vuitton which capitalises on the light transmitting properties of various stones and marbles). The colour here is makes the building feel as crisp as if it were white, while being less literal. It's quite genius for Ito to have chosen a colour that appears in the colour spectrum observed on a pearl while it glistens as only pearls do, rather than being so literal as to paint it "pearl".

It seems these pencils will be left on my desk when i go to bed each night until at least the week's end.

The magic of this season's Comme des Garcons show, for me, was the way Rei Kawakubo presented garments that were so extremely deconstructed, but made soft, not only through some of the material choices (Kawakubo apparently used her personal collection of vintage scarves to create some of the looks) but also through the detailing. Chunks of different garments elegantly held together by a ribbon bow. Extra bows also appeared on the tops of shoes, but not in an Adidas Originals kind of way, in a much more sophisticated way, that seemed to reference bow ties of garcons rather than Minnie Mouse.

SO SOFT! I would never ever have imagined such intense deconstuction could be broken down by the application of a single strong bow. THe positioning of the bow is just perfect too, as is the chiffon back, which immediately sends my brain rushing back to the ghost coast and sausage dresses of FW09, possibly the collection I am most obsessed with.
Note the exceptionally manly detailing of the trousers. These could be any man's work trousers, until you see the whole look and realise they are short shorts. I think this is the whole looks actually here due to the leather edge you can see in the detail....which is INSANE! FLOOR LENGTH CROC-SKIN TRENCH COAT APRON! WHAT?

Almost the complete inverse of the strong black coats fastened with ribbons, the strip of scarf coming down from the right shoulder to beneath the left arm looks buckled, but is just clever print arrangement, and adds a slight toughness to the scrappy femininity of the dress constructed entirely of scarves. So Comme!

THis looks was interesting because it could almost have been taken from the men's collection from the same season.....but somehow it works better here. (I am sad to say i actually hated Comme des Garcons menswear fw11/12....surely some individual pieces will be great, but overall, the show really threw me...I am, ironically, aware that this is the purpose of the avant-garde, for whom Kawakubo remains a Patron Saint.

I love the way the the fabric feels like it almost tied itself in knots of the right, wriggling and undulating into frills and irregular pleats between the knotted clusters. The peek hole to the back is just beyond! so subtle! i wish more men's pieces would embrace the back, there is nothing more amazing than seeing someone's spine.

The softness reapperas in the way the fabrics are overlaid and put together, left slightly loose, not pulled taught to create soft waves rather than strong lines. The loose tailoring on the shoulder and sleeve carry through the effect. You can imagine how mesemerising it would be to see all these elements in motion.

I finished reading the book Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion a good 2 weeks ago now, but the concepts it presented are still floating around the cavernous cranium that occupies the space above my neck.
One chapter in particular addressed the notion of two dimensions in Japanese Fashion, discussing how the kimono is essentially a two dimensional object that gains its form only once wrapped around the body, it went on to explore how Rei Kawakubo and Issey Miyake, in particular, also worked from this principle, creating garments that have entirely different appearances when laid flat to when they are hanging from the body.
Looking at an example produced Rei Kawakubo whose appearance as a flat piece almost seemed to be derived from the plan of the Barcelona Pavilion, I started to realise how architectural this process or approach to design was.

The Pavillion was cnstructed as the German Pavillion for the 1929 International Exposition held in Barcelona. It was torn down a year after the exposition, but it's role in modern architecture was such to justify it's reconstuction based on records of the time, by a group of Spanish architects from 1983-1986. The reproduction still stands and provides an excuse for a cultural pilgrimage to Barcelona for architects world round.

The modernists designed architecture in a very similar fashion, beginning with a plan and the projecting walls vertically to give the building height, and thickening or thinning lines, to indicate materiality and create depth along the horizontal plane within a structure.
Modernism was also concerned with how these 2D, or rather planar elements, interacted with the body. Obviously a building will not be as immediate to a person as an item of clothing, but both these outcomes of a design process have the potential to encourage or restrict activities carried out by the body.
